The death of a classical
musician, Lorin Maazel, in July 2014, caused anguish to his fans. That’s quite
reasonable since he has contributed greatly to the development of classical
music; one of which is developing the technique of memory-based stick that
makes the music conductor need not rely on the score (note musical tone) while
leading the orchestra. In addition, Lorin also contributed greatly to the
success of the New York Philharmonic concert in Korea in 2008. The concert
became the starting point where music was able to emerge from all political
dissent.
It is natural as we are
deeply grieved when we lose people who have done much good deeds during their
lifetime. However, today’s bible reading reminds us of David’s lamentation over
Saul and over Jonathan his son. It is very unusual for David to mourn the death
of Saul, a man who hated him very much and planned to kill him. Saul was the
main cause behind David’s suffering even until he lost his son.
Even so, he did not hate
Saul. David chose to not remember him as an enemy nor a criminal, but a brave
Israeli hero. As David lamented in 2 Samuel 1:23, “Saul and Jonathan were
beloved and pleasant in their lives, And in their death they were not divided;
They were swifter than eagles, They were stronger than lions.”
Today, remember that
there are always many reasons to hate. But whatever the reason, do not hate
anyone because of his actions. God created everyone as good; yet they develop
bad attitude. So, be patient, and pray for those who have hated and persecuted
you.
Never
instill revenge for your enemy; forgive and love them.
