Kings 2:9
And so it was, when
they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask! What may I do for
you, before I am taken away from you?" Elisha said, "Please let a
double portion of your spirit be upon me."

When it’s time for
God to call Elijah and take him into heaven, Elisha, the servant and disciple
and friend of Elijah, did not want to leave him. It shows us how close the
relationship between the two—a prophet and his successor. Yet Elijah knew that
the time has come, and he said to the disciple, “Ask! What may I do for you,
before I am taken away from you?”
Elisha’s answer
proved that he had great vision and faith. Undoubtedly, he asked for a double
portion of Elijah’s spirit. Elisha had seen the demonstration of God’s power in
Elijah just in a moment before they crossed over the Jordan River, as Moses
divided the sea and brought the Israelites crossed over. Isn’t that just
amazing? Yet, Elisha asked for a double portion of the power inside Elijah.
So Elijah said,
"You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken
from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so."
Having said this,
the two went on a trip while continuing to talk, and suddenly a chariot of fire
appeared and took Elijah up to heaven. If you were there when it occurred, then
you would feel more than just shocked. Elisha was not only shocked knowing that
his beloved was already gone, but he feared the Lord and amazed at Him as well,
knowing that the heavenly creature had taken his teacher away. However, that
made him realized that he had received the spiritual inheritance from Elijah,
the power he asked for before. Later, he picked up Elijah’s robe that left and
used it to divide the Jordan River, the same way his teacher has done before.
Most of the
Christians have no courage to ask God for great things, while in fact, God
really wants to give us them. We confine ourselves with limited mindset and
view, so when God said, “Ask! What may I do for you?” we are reluctant to ask
for greater things. Today, let us learn from Elisha, how he asked for great
things because God has said, “Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for
Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession.” (Psalm
2:8)
Don’t let fear confine you, for
God has provided great things for you. Ask!
