wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His
spirit.

The cross is the aim of Jesus’ birth.
His birth ends in His death. Incarnation is God’s greatest redemption for
humans through Jesus Christ. He was born to die so we can live. And Jesus has
fulfilled God’s promise and accomplished the mission with these words: It is
finished!
It is finished or Tetelestai in Greek
is a common word. Jesus might have said these words many times before: when
Jesus told Joseph that he had done his work as a carpenter.
But the very same words that Jesus said
at the cross have
a very important meaning. Jesus tried to emphasize that His suffering at the
cross was once for forever. He will never experience such suffering anymore—the
beat and the slap. He will never bear the sins again. He will never be forsaken
by God anymore. His mission was finished at the cross!
“It is finished” also means that Jesus
has died to break devil and evil spirit’s power. As written in Hebrews 2:14, “Inasmuch
then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise
shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power
of death, that is, the devil.” Jesus’ suffering is to set humans free from the
bondage of sin!
Besides, “It is finished” is a sign of
our salvation. Jesus has exchanged sins with His blood at the cross. Therefore,
Jesus’ words at the cross are
to fulfill God’s plan.
Christ
is willing to endure suffering so that we can receive forgiveness from God.
