James 1:19

So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

When we have high expressed emotions, usually we would go out of our mind. We tend to speak harshly; we want to punish those who make us angry. As a result of it, many times we feel negative impacts when we wrongly give vent to our anger.

Nowadays, Jakarta city government is running “Please do not litter” cause. Therefore, we are required to throw our trash into the right place—and so it is with our spiritual trash. We need to throw bitterness, disappointment, anger, resentment, jealousy, and other evil thoughts away. Otherwise, they will defile our heart and increasing until there’s no more space to accommodate.

When bad thoughts come, try these tips from James. Be slow to speak, and even to wrath. However, listen to others first. Listen to what he says and what he wants. Try to figure out the cause of misunderstanding that leads to conflict. Listen more and let the emotions subside by focusing on God.

It does not occur by itself, but we have to train ourselves. The more we learn, the faster we are able to throw the emotions into the right place, in the right way, and for the right purpose.

Be slow to speak as well as to wrath. Rather, listen first. Listen to what people say and what they want. Try to figure out the cause of misunderstanding that leads to conflict.
