In our daily life, people who have been unfairly treated or hurt in a conflict would say, “Have a heart (bhs Indonesia: hati)!” This sentence has clear and sharp meaning. It does not imply that the man has no liver (bhs Indonesia: hati) in his body, but it means he has no mercy.
If we take a look at this, liver is one of human’s organs that performs the following functions: it removes toxins from the body, regulates the amounts of carbohydrate, it stores minerals, it processes fat emulsion, and so on.
The liver is definitely important to body, but what does heart do in maintaining good relationship with others and God? As written in Proverbs 4:23, “keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” Heart is the source of life, and it has to be resemblant to God’s loving heart.
Many people tend to hurt others, treat them unfairly, despise them, and plan bad things for them. That’s when they could not touch the love of God. Those who have touched by God would completely different from those who haven’t. For God has taught them first about love.
Therefore, if we have already understood that out of heart spring the issues of life, then will we guard it and keep it far from impurity? Let us come to Him and get the Father’s heart!
Out of a heart renewed in God’s love will flow the springs of life full of mercy and gentleness.
