In the geography of the Old Testament, there is a dry river. Palestinian deer sometimes find trunks of the dry river in the dry season. If this happens, the deers usually along the streams and climb up to find a spring that still has a thin stream of water to quench their thirst. However, it is not uncommon to find dead deer lying in the middle of the stem of the river because it really did not find any water.

Thus the psalmist described the sons of Korah who longing for God. His longing is the thirsty longing for the living God. The thirst cannot be replaced with anything but meet with God directly. God is pleased to find his heart yearn with desire. Praying, singing, and worshipping God do not only involve an element of rationality itself. However, it needs to involve the feeling and passionate soul which is praising and glorifying God.

Blaise Pascal said that there is an empty space in our heart that will always feel empty until the room is filled with God's presence yet. As long as its space is still empty, humans will always try to fill it with variety things, such as wealth, pleasure, and fame. However, this kind of thing would never be able to fill the vacancy. The soul of man without God is like a dead deer in the middle of the stem in the dry river. Empty soul will keep looking and searching, until the emptiness has already been satisfied by God. For, He is the origin and destination of the human soul - DBS
