John 3:8

But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

In a spiritual movie called A Thousand Words, the main character Jack McCall has to receive consequence of hurtful words he had spoken in the past. Jack has to face the reality that his life was determined by a thousand words he had spoken.

And there is a tree in his yard which becomes a judge of his every word. The more he speaks, the more leaves will fall and the less his lifetime will be. It is interesting how McCall needs to save his words, including while talking with his wife, colleagues, or when ordering the coffee in his favorite coffee shop.

Even though it is fictional, the story of Jack McCall tells us a great message. In this story, Jack learns that the tongue God has given him should be used to speak the right and kind words. James 3:8 reminds us how dangerous a tongue is; no man can tame it. A tongue is described as unruly, evil, and full of deadly poison. Many people have been victims of untamed tongues. Many people unconsciously spread the deadly poison through their careless words.

The Bible advises us to be more careful in speaking. God does not have to plant the magical tree so that we learn how to speak carefully. Rather, we need His grace that enables us to tame the unruly tongue. He wants our tongues to be used to praise God and speak blessings instead of cursing. Let us keep our words and turn them to be blessing for others!

Use your mouth to speak the Word of God, to thank God, and to bless other people.
