Philippians 1:21

For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

Fear comes upon many people when they hear a word “death”, and some of them do not want to die. Dying sounds so scary, especially if it happens tragically. Maybe that’s what we feel after hearing the death of passengers of missing AirAsia QZ8501 plane in Karimata Strait last week.

The question is, why does the death sound so bad to many people? The answer may be quite simple; they are not willing to leave what they have already had in this world—their wealth or their family. Others may say that they are too young to die, and they have a lot of things left to do. Then why should they fear of losing all of them? They are already bound and shackled with all the pleasures of the world, without realizing that one day everything will return to dust.

Death is certainty. When we fear death, we haven’t given God our life wholeheartedly. The desire to meet God becomes less than the fear.

It is contrary to what the Apostle of Paul says in Phi 1:21, “…to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” His courage to face death at any time proves how great his love to God. He also realizes that all things is the world are perishable and temporary. So he chose to save eternal wealth in heaven by prioritizing God’s work and doing good deeds.

We should stick with this paradigm since human being’s reality is avoidable; there will be time when we have no authority to refuse death if God has decided. And death cannot be scary anymore, but anticipated by those whose hope in Christ. That’s principle of faith we should embrace!

In this life, man is born, grown up, and then he waits for his death to return to The One’s bosom.
