CBN Children's Discipleship Helps Church Answer Children's Needs in Tanaraing

Thanks to your continued support, CBN Indonesia continues to focus on building 80 discipleship ecosystems spread across various regions, from Sabang to Merauke. This discipleship ecosystem exists to equip CBN's church network in discipling children aged 3-14 years and their parents through the presence of ECCE Super5, Superbook, School of Life (SOL) and The Parenting Project. To realize a comprehensive impact, CBN also supports selected underprivileged families in this discipleship ecosystem through MSME programs, farmer groups, clean water supply, and nutrition and health improvements. The goal is to help children and their families experience a complete transformation in physical, spiritual and well-being.

This August, we specifically introduced the CBN discipleship ecosystem in Tanaraing Village, Waingapu Regency, East Sumba. The CBN discipleship ecosystem is present in Tanaraing Village as an answer to the needs of children, the majority of whom come from poor, neglected and broken homes. Central Bureau of Statistics data for 2022 reveals that East Sumba occupies the top third position as the poorest region in East Nusa Tenggara province, with a percentage of poverty rate reaching 28.22%. Unstable income from agriculture, fisheries, and forestry is a factor that forces parents to focus on work and do not have much time to pay attention to children at home. Neglected because of the busyness of parents, many children in Tanaraing Village grow up with malnourished conditions and harsh characters.

Through GKS Tanaraing, CBN meets the needs of children in Tanaraing Village by presenting comprehensive child discipleship through PAUD Super5, Superbook Sunday School and SoL Learning Center. Priest of GKS Jemaat Tanaraing Rev. Katrina R. Wanu, S. Th and the child caregiver (Sunday school teachers, ECCE teachers and SOL tutors), wholeheartedly served as many as 66 Superbook Sunday School children, 17 Super5 children and 50 SOL children. In between teaching, teachers also give time to visit children's homes and meet with their parents. In addition to discussing child development, teachers also become parents' sharing friends.  The good relationship with the parents of the children opened the door for the church with CBN also discipled the parents.

The following is the impact of the CBN child discipleship ecosystem at GKS Jemaat Tanaraing, East Sumba.

Through the involvement of CBN Partners in supporting the child discipleship ecosystem at GKS Jemaat Tanaraing, a child named Jen Regina (10 years old) has made an impact on her surroundings. The child, who is familiarly called Nona Kitu, has been taken care of by her mother since the age of 3 months, while her mother and father are busy working in different cities.

Nona Kitu used to be a shy child and rarely prayed. She would definitely bow her head whenever told to pray in front of her friends. The reason is she was embarrassed in case she was ridiculed by her friends. However, since joining SOL at GKS Jemaat Tanaraing, Nona Kitu has changed her confidence and dared to pray. She was inspired by the Bible study of John the Baptist that she attended at SOL. Nona Kitu was eager to be like John the Baptist who was used to serve God. So whenever there is an opportunity to visit the home of SOL students, Nona Kitu will volunteer as a devotional bearer.

This change made SOL teachers proud, and the same sense of pride was expressed by their mothers since Nona Kitu wanted to lead prayers at home.

'She used to not dare to lead prayers at home, but now she always invites us all to pray and starts leading prayers before eating and sleeping,' said Bertha Haba.
